Bill leads Carmen Ventures and manages the overall operations including fundraising, investments, diligence and portfolio management. He is responsible for cultivating partnerships and relationships with Carmen’s syndicate investors, institutional partners and Buckeye Nation.
Bill is an exited serial software and technology consulting entrepreneur whose company was recognized by Inc. Magazine as the fastest-growing software firm in the US and honored as the Northern Ohio Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. He has spent the last eight years working across the State of Ohio selecting, advising and guiding investment in the most promising technology companies via the Entrepreneurial Signature Program. He has coached hundreds of startups that have raised over $500 million in capital and have a market cap exceeding $5 billion.
Bill holds a BSBA from The Ohio State University dual majors in Information Systems & Marketing and an MBA from the University of Akron.
Michael Camp, Ph. D
Michael has 30 years of experience in founding new ventures, screening innovation, and crafting market entry strategies for emerging technology startups. He has invested in and/or advised hundreds of young founders across numerous technology verticals in validating business models and attracting early-stage funding. Michael is currently a partner in BioVentures Group, a boutique venture development studio focused on biotechnology.
Michael is an award-winning entrepreneurship educator having trained thousands of aspiring student and professional entrepreneurs in the advanced principles of technology commercialization. At the Kauffman Foundation (1998-2004) and at The Ohio State University (2004-2021), he designed and led numerous programs in technology entrepreneurship and commercialization, evaluating more than 500 technologies, resulting in 100+ startups that have raised more than $125 million in venture funding.
He holds a masters and a doctoral degree in strategic entrepreneurship from Ohio State.
Jeff (J.D.) Davids is a software company founder with over 30 years of experience building startup companies in California. He is an 8-time venture capital backed entrepreneur with 6 successful exits, including 3 IPOs and 3 acquisitions. J.D. is an expert at fundraising and exit planning, closing over $1.5 billion in corporate financial transactions.
J.D.'s SmartMoney Ventures education programs have had over 3,500 participants with upwards of 50 portfolio companies having raised over $140 million in funding in the last three years. He’s also the host of the SmartMoney Ventures podcast along with co-host, Dave Berkus.
J.D. is a cum laude graduate of The Ohio State University’s Honors Accounting Program and is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
Andy began his career at CompuServe as the Internet was becoming a commercial force. While there, he managed connections in the Investor’s Forum – the basis of our Carmen Ventures community. After various Internet start-ups in Austin, TX, he rejoined America Online prior to their merger with Time Warner. After moving back to Ohio, he became a charter member and Managing Director of the Ohio TechAngels, then the second-largest Angel investing group in the U.S. with 283 members. While there he made 49 investments in 32 startups and formed a company as a spin-out from Ohio State. He is currently the founder and Chief Executive Officer of SmartPaint, a revolutionary nano-materials company with applications in aerospace, energy, mobility, and many other markets.
Andy holds B.S. degrees in Finance and Computer Science from The Ohio State University.
Mike starts and operates venture-backed, technology companies. He is currently co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of OnSeen, Inc, a Columbus, Ohio-based early-stage company that has developed a command-and-control platform for mobile teams in the healthcare market. Mike is a current Board member of Cultivate, a non-profit organization that helps entrepreneurs in Central Ohio start and grow businesses. He also serves as a Civil Affairs officer in the United States Army Reserve, and he previously served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy.
Mike holds degrees from the University of Oxford, where he attended as a Rhodes Scholar, and The Ohio State University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, captain of the football team and two-time Academic All-American.
Michael Triplett, Ph. D
Michael is passionate about commercializing pioneering science and technology for the benefit of patients worldwide and Ohio. He co-founded and led Myonexus Therapeutics, a clinical stage gene therapy company developing first-ever gene therapies for limb-girdle muscular dystrophies that was acquired by Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) in 2019. He subsequently co-founded Clarametyx Biosciences, an infectious disease biotech, Armatus Bio, a neuromuscular gene therapy company, and Neucore Bio, a next generation brain disease gene therapy company developing nonviral targeted CNS therapies.
Mike holds a B.S., summa cum laude, and Ph.D., United States Department of Defense National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow, in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University.
Ted brings a long-standing record as a trusted advisor to large and small consumer brands and has a passion for innovation and new ideas. Prior to joining Carmen Ventures, Ted served as Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for Starbucks where he co-led global initiatives in the US and across global markets. Prior to Starbucks, Ted served as a Vice President & Senior Counsel to the L Brands Corporation for nearly two decades.
Ted is the Chairman of Grant Street Partners, a global public affairs firm focused on retail, entertainment, and professional services companies. He is a two time graduate of The Ohio State University with a law degree from The Moritz College of Law and a Masters’ Degree in Sports Management from The School of Human Ecology and Education. Ted is active in the community through service on non profit boards focused on health, education, and athletics.
Gary Booth (PhD, organic chemistry, 1965) has enjoyed a successful 31-year career in research and development at Procter & Gamble (P&G). During his time there, he became a vice president of research and worked abroad for 10 years in Brussels and London. His work was instrumental in the development of many popular household brands, including Pantene, Bounty, Folgers, and Crest. Booth credits his career to this education at Ohio State.
Booth is the committee chairman for Ohio State’s CBEC Chemistry and Biochemistry National Committee and is leading the committee’s efforts to raise $8 million for the new facility.
Dave Williams, Ph. D
Dave Williams may have received his B.A, M.A., Ph.D. and Sc.D. from Cambridge University, but he’s a Buckeye through and through.
Williams served as the Dean of the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University from 2011-2021, where they have 66,000 alumni and more than 25 companies that have grown out of the research in the College over the last decade.
